Wood Kit Parts Look Alike? Add an Assembly Map Before Cutting

Give each similar wood-kit piece a unique position on a printed or screen assembly map before cutting. Keep those identifiers separate from laser output and verify that they cannot reach the A1 Mini processing file. This preserves the appearance of the pieces while making a pile of similar ribs or tabs easier to assemble.

A beginner's question about small construction kits includes dinosaur and building projects. Choosing a machine is only part of that task: once matching-looking components leave the sheet, the builder needs a way to distinguish their intended positions and orientation.

Number by assembly role, not by drawing order

Use identifiers such as R1 through R6 for ribs and B1 through B3 for base pieces. Add a simple outline thumbnail next to each identifier. Show the feature that distinguishes near-matches: an offset slot, a shorter tab, or the side that faces outward. Avoid relying only on color because a printed map or workshop screen may not reproduce it clearly.

Put identifiers on a non-output reference layer in the design application if that application supports it. Keep the original layout intact. Export a separate assembly map for viewing or printing and a separate processing file containing only intended operations. A hidden layer is not automatically excluded from every export route, so inspect the final transferred file and its preview.

The A1 Mini product page lists a 120 × 130 mm working area. That is not permission to cut every wood-kit material or thickness. Confirm material identity and current processing guidance, and divide a larger kit into separately mapped sheets if needed. Keep the sheet number beside each part ID so duplicate identifiers across sheets cannot create confusion.

Rehearse one assembly without losing the map

Before a paid or gift batch, use the map to check the intended assembly sequence on a representative proof. Account for every piece before discarding surrounding material. If a purchased kit file cannot be edited, inspect its groups and individual vector paths on a copy rather than forcing changes to the original.

Should I engrave a number on every piece?

Only if visible numbering is wanted and the added operation is qualified. A separate map and sorting tray can provide identification without marking the finished faces.

What if two parts look identical after cutting?

Compare their dimensions and slots against the map before assembly. If their differences are too subtle for reliable sorting, retain their mapped positions during safe unloading and revise the identification method before making more kits.
