DXF Cutline Has Tiny Gaps: Find Open Paths Before a Large Cut
Tiny gaps in a DXF are file-geometry defects before they are laser-setting problems. Select open shapes, inspect endpoints at final scale, join only intended pairs, and cut a measured scrap contour before using a large sheet.
An August 9, 2026 user asks how to handle open DXF or SVG paths that will not close and hidden gaps that consume production time. See the August open-path thread.
A node that appears closed at normal zoom may still contain a physical break. The scrap contour should include the same corner type and final scale, because a tiny decorative sample may not expose the production gap.
DXF gap questions
Can I close every open path automatically?
No. Some openings are intentional, and a large tolerance may join unrelated geometry.
Why does a tiny screen gap matter?
A cutting path can stop, reverse or leave a physical tab even when the gap is hard to see at normal zoom.
Will more power close the gap?
No. Missing geometry is not corrected by stronger output.
Repair only intended contours
1. Keep the original export unchanged.
2. Use the software's open-shape selection or node view.
3. Measure each endpoint gap and confirm the intended contour.
4. Remove stray segments without closing intentional slots.
5. Preview and cut one small representative contour.
The geometry proof ends on flame, a collision threat or an unexpected path; stronger output cannot repair a gap.
Open-path audit
| Check | Proof kept | Accept or hold |
|---|---|---|
| Open endpoint | Visible node pair | Join only intended edge |
| Intentional opening | Vent, slot or design break | Leave documented |
| Stray segment | No role in finished part | Delete in working copy |
| Proof | Part releases along expected contour | Proceed to sheet |
Save a zoomed node view with the released scrap contour. The baseline record pairs open endpoint with visible node pair. A second observation for intentional opening must remain separate so the 'Leave documented' decision is traceable.
Release the closed geometry
If a repaired contour lands in the wrong column, Large LightBurn Grid Shifts by Column: Check Start Position Mode tests origin and start-position behavior. If the edge is retraced instead of shifted, SVG Cuts the Same Edge Twice: Check for Duplicate Lines checks for stacked paths.
Release the contour after every intended endpoint is accounted for.
Large-sheet file boundary
X1S 2026 workspace size does not validate imported geometry. Use supported software, an eligible material and a continuously supervised proof. The live TYVOK X1S 2026 listing must be reopened before relying on modules or accessories. Use eligible scrap whose flatness will not create a false gap diagnosis.
