Need Decimal Size Labels? Use Explicit Values, Not Serial Counts

For labels such as “6.5 mm” or “1/4 in,” prepare the exact displayed values as text instead of assuming an integer serial sequence will generate the measurements you need. Keep the label text separate from the dimensions used to draw the matching holes. Changing an engraved label does not resize its hole.

That distinction appears in a LightBurn drill-organizer discussion, where decimal increments and decimal-comma formatting complicated the intended labels. The official Variable Text reference supports substituting entries from a CSV file and inspecting the resulting text in Preview. Explicit values make mixed measurement sequences easier to inspect.

Give every position a measurement and a display string

Create one row per physical organizer position. Include a stable position identifier, the design measurement and a separate field containing exactly what the user should read. Keep the unit visible rather than relying on the surrounding project name.

For example, a position may have a nominal tool size expressed in millimeters but display an inch fraction. That conversion needs independent verification. The hole drawing also needs the intended fit allowance and a material-specific sample; it should not inherit a dimension merely because a label looks plausible.

These are formatting examples, not a sequence of equivalent sizes or cutting dimensions.

Inspect the exported data before filling the panel

Spreadsheet software may convert fractions to dates, remove trailing zeros or change decimal punctuation. Reopen the exported file as text and inspect several rows. If a comma is part of a displayed measurement, verify that the CSV field remains intact rather than splitting into another column. Use the file format and quoting supported by the software, then confirm the result after loading it.

In LightBurn, check the chosen CSV field, current row and the offsets assigned to repeated labels. Preview the first label, a point where the format changes and the final label. Then examine the complete panel for skipped or repeated positions. Do not assume the sequence begins where yesterday's run stopped intentionally.

For an identifier printed alongside the measurement, apply fixed-width serial-number formatting separately. A serial code and a physical size serve different purposes and need separate acceptance checks.

Use a legible proof before engraving a full organizer

Verify the supported software and installed setup, and sample the intended lettering on suitable material. Neither panel capacity nor correct variable text establishes readable contrast at your chosen size.

A visible paper or PDF proof can expose a misplaced decimal or missing fraction before stock is consumed. Compare it against the actual tool list and drawing measurements, not just the previous screen preview.

Why did 1/4 become a date in my label file?

The spreadsheet may have interpreted the entry as a date. Store the display field as text, export it again, and inspect the actual characters in the exported file and laser-software preview.

Can the same CSV automatically size my organizer holes?

Text substitution alone does not do that. Draw or generate the hole geometry through a separately verified process, then compare its dimensions with the intended fit and position records.
