Best Materials for Laser Engraving in 2026: Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about engraving wood, acrylic, leather, metal, and more. Which materials give the best results, and which ones you should avoid.

Introduction: The Material Makes the Product

You can have the best laser in the world, but if you use the wrong material, your results will be garbage.

The good news: most materials work great with a laser engraver. But some work better than others. And some you should never use at all.

In this guide, we'll cover every common laser material, how they engrave, what settings to use, and which ones give you the best profit margin.

Wood is the most versatile and beginner friendly material.

Materials You Should NEVER Laser Engrave

These are dangerous. Don't do it.

PVC / Vinyl - Produces chlorine gas when lasered. Toxic. Will also destroy your laser optics. Never, ever laser PVC.

Polycarbonate (Lexan) - Produces toxic fumes, catches fire easily, doesn't engrave well. Just don't.

ABS Plastic - Produces cyanide fumes when burned. Not worth the risk.

Any unknown material - If you don't know what it is, don't laser it. Better safe than sorry.

Our Recommendation for Beginners

Start with these 3 materials first. They're easy, forgiving, and have the highest profit margins: - Baltic Birch Plywood - Easy, forgiving, cheap, customers love it

  • Cast Acrylic - Beautiful results, extremely high profit margin
