Test how a loose paper coil expands and lifts out before labeling a homemade quilling circle template. The useful hole is the finished opening that shapes the coil, not just the diameter drawn in the file. Sanding, residue and backing choices can change how the paper behaves.

Try one working hole before a board full of sizes
Choose a circle size you already use. Roll several coils using the same paper strip length and technique, allow each to relax in the sample opening, then lift it out in your normal manner. Compare the shapes on a flat surface. A hole that gives a repeatable size but makes the coil tear during removal still needs revision.
Watch the entire wall of the opening. A small rough area can hook an outer turn even when most of the hole feels smooth. Clean and smooth the wooden surface appropriately, then test again with fresh paper. Do not use glue inside the hole during this check; you want to observe release rather than bond the coil to the tool.
- Lay out one small original test opening and enough surrounding wood to handle it comfortably.
- Confirm the measured outer dimensions fit the A1 Mini with setup margin.
- Process only known compatible bare wood under direct supervision and extraction.
- Inspect, clean and finish the opening, then measure its actual diameter.
- Relax and remove several matching paper coils before labeling or multiplying the design.
Keep a backing decision separate from the cut file
A removable support beneath a through-hole may help contain the coil while it relaxes, but it changes how you lift the paper. Compare access from above with lifting the template off its support. If you add a permanent backing after laser work, make sure the chosen thickness still permits your normal removal technique.
Do not process unknown foam, plastic or adhesive layers just because a craft tutorial uses them with another cutting tool. Select the laser material on its own evidence. The A1 Mini product page provides the machine's compact 120 × 130 mm work area; it does not establish a recipe for every layered craft board.
If a long group of circles only fits when rotated, check its complete rotated bounding dimensions. A diagonal arrangement does not bypass the machine's rectangular travel limits. Consider two independent small boards instead of removing all the wood between neighboring holes.
Should the engraved label use the drawn diameter or the measured hole?
Use an accurate description of the finished tool. If smoothing noticeably changes the opening, revise it or label the verified size; do not preserve an incorrect number for appearance.
Why do my coils differ even in the same hole?
Paper length, rolling tension and how fully the coil relaxes can differ. Keep those constant before blaming the template. The hole constrains the outside, but it does not control the entire rolling process.
The same measurement discipline matters in a small sewing-width gauge: identify the actual working surface before assigning a dimension to it.
