Large Object, Small Mark: Prove P2 Handheld Placement First

A large object may be accessible to a portable head while still being unsuitable for a stable, contained engraving setup. Before marking it with P2, prove the orientation, support, focus position and surrounding exclusion area with emission off. If any of those cannot be established using the current manual, decline the placement rather than improvise during output.

The buyer in this handheld-galvo discussion asks whether access to large objects outweighs the alignment advantages of a fixed setup. That is the right purchasing question: access and repeatability are separate requirements.

Draw the placement before moving the head

Use a paper representation of the intended mark to discuss orientation with the owner, away from the processing area. Identify an unambiguous front and top on the object. Then establish how the object and head will be supported without rocking or moving. A large panel resting on an unstable edge is not ready merely because the design fits on it.

The P2 project guide describes stand and handheld working styles. Its 60 × 60 mm field remains a limit for the mark in this workflow. Handheld access does not enlarge that field, authorize freehand movement during emission, or establish a method for joining multiple exposures.

Remove temporary paper masks and other placement aids from the emission area before processing unless the current instructions explicitly permit their use. Keep combustible staging materials clear. Nobody should steady the work with a hand in the processing zone.

Moving location means checking capture again

An extraction arrangement that worked at a bench may not capture emissions from the new position. Use the whole-air-route worksheet to record changed capture distance, duct route and discharge location. Its measurements concern an external ventilation system; they are not accessory compatibility claims for P2.

Only after placement and safety conditions are satisfied should a documented procedure on a compatible expendable sample be considered. Keep continuous attendance and fire readiness. Any movement, lost standoff, escaping smoke or abnormal heat ends the attempt. An irreplaceable customer object is a poor place to discover an unproven setup.

Use the customer-item intake record when the object's substrate or coating is uncertain. Material acceptance comes before proving placement; current manufacturer instructions govern the operating arrangement.

Can I sweep the head across a larger design?

No such procedure is established here. The placement check is for one stationary mark within the documented field. Do not move the head or object during emission.

Is a flat surface enough to approve the job?

No. Surface identity, stable support, focus, containment and extraction all remain necessary. A flat unknown coating should not be used for a trial exposure.
