Photo Engraving Shadows Plugging Up? Build a Three-Tone Proof

If dark areas of a photograph merge into a solid mark, compare the source image with a small three-tone proof before changing laser power. The useful question is whether the missing separation exists in the file, survives image processing, and remains visible on the chosen blank. Those are three different observations.

The current xTool photo-preparation guide discusses contrast and image preparation. It supports preparing the photograph carefully; its machine examples are not P2 settings.

Build a proof that answers one question

Keep the customer original unchanged. On a working copy, choose a crop containing a bright feature, an intermediate tone and a dark feature that must remain recognizable. A portrait might use a shirt highlight, cheek and dark hair. Add three labeled reference patches beside the crop. They are visual comparisons, not a calibrated measurement instrument.

Use matching scrap from a documented compatible blank. Keep focus, placement, material face and the approved baseline process fixed. First compare the original preparation with one revised image that opens the dark region without erasing the bright feature. Do not change contrast, size, power and speed together: that produces two different results without explaining either.

Read a failed pair without guessing

Suppose the digital hair and background are distinct in both versions, but neither proof separates them. That is evidence to investigate the blank/process combination; it does not establish a defective laser. If the second preview already merges them, return to image preparation before producing another sample.

Keep both physical proofs labeled and compare under the same lighting. Approving one while wet and another after finishing can change the comparison. If finishing is part of the order, approve a representative finished sample through the documented material workflow.

If the supplied artwork is already a black-and-white dot pattern, use the pre-dithered input check before this experiment. If the defect is repeated horizontal bands rather than missing tonal separation, the filled-letter banding test addresses that separate symptom.

What the P2 selection establishes

The TYVOK P2 product page positions the machine for compact personalization. It does not guarantee that every photograph or surface can reproduce all tones. Select a documented compatible blank and current configuration, follow the machine's enclosure, extraction and supervision instructions, and approve a small sample before accepting the complete gift.

Should I brighten every dark photograph?

No. First check whether useful detail exists in the original. Brightening a flat dark region cannot recreate missing facial features and may wash out the rest of the photograph.

Is a good screen preview enough to accept a customer order?

No. It validates an image-processing step. The actual compatible blank, process and any intended finishing still need a physical approval sample.
