A road drawn as a thick black stroke has two visible edges. An outline trace follows those edges, so the result can be a narrow closed shape rather than one path down the road. If you want single-line engraving, you need centerline geometry or a manually rebuilt road network; reducing the displayed stroke width does not remove the second path.
That distinction prompted a March 2026 street-map question: the maker wanted roads to remain single lines after converting a PNG. The discussion also showed why an automatic conversion still needs inspection—small gaps can remain in detailed streets. Treat that as a file-preparation problem before choosing laser settings.
Decide what the road is meant to represent
Keep the original map untouched and make a working copy. A filled road of varying width, a pair of road boundaries, and a centerline describe different artwork. Converting between them can remove intentional distinctions between highways, lanes and paths.
For a decorative map, write down whether width carries meaning. If every road will become one engraved stroke, consider how the viewer will distinguish a major road from an alley. Labels or separate artwork treatment may be necessary. Do not assume the final burned line will exactly match the thin on-screen path.
Three small areas reveal most conversion mistakes
Before converting an entire X1S 2026 panel, compare these examples at the intended finished scale:

Use a centerline tool whose current documentation confirms the function, or redraw the necessary paths manually over the reference. A historical announcement about a planned LightBurn feature is not evidence that the feature exists in your installed version. Export a small sample, reimport it into the production software, and inspect the paths there before committing to the full map.
Count a few streets in the original and converted sample. Inspect node connections as well as visual overlap: two endpoints may look joined at normal zoom without actually meeting. Keep any labels on separate operations so they do not accidentally become part of the road trace.
Moving the checked map onto the X1S 2026
The TYVOK X1S product page describes its large-format workflow. Verify the installed configuration and usable area for your panel; a larger workspace does not correct missing geometry. Confirm that the wood and any coating are suitable for the chosen process, then test the approved engraving operation on a matching offcut. Single-line artwork does not mean the roads should be cut through.
Once the road network is correct, preserve engrave-and-cut order for layered maps. The same appearance-versus-path distinction matters when dotted strokes are mistaken for individual holes.
Can I delete one side of every traced road?
Not reliably. The remaining edge follows one boundary, not necessarily the center. At junctions and changing road widths, that shortcut can shift intersections or leave disconnected pieces.
Should the smallest streets disappear when I reduce detail?
Only if that is an intentional design choice. Check a known small street before and after simplification, and record which level of detail the customer approved before producing the panel.
