SVG Stitch Holes Import as One Line: Check for a Dotted Stroke

If an SVG sewing pattern shows dots in the design program but imports as one line, the dots may be stroke styling rather than separate hole shapes. Inspect the source paths before changing laser settings. For intended individual holes, obtain or create explicit closed contours, then verify their size, count and spacing after import.

This occurred in a September 2026 LightBurn import discussion. The purchased artwork used an Illustrator dotted stroke, and expanding its appearance introduced problems at the ends. That makes the original pattern file an essential part of the diagnosis: the laser software cannot recover intended hole geometry from appearance alone with certainty.

Look beneath the dotted appearance

Make a copy of the SVG and examine a short straight segment in the source editor. Can you select one dot as a closed path? Does a path view show individual contours or a single continuous route? Repeat that inspection near a corner and at the end of the seam.

Expanding a stroke may create closed shapes, but that is only a conversion step. It does not prove the resulting ends are circular, the corner spacing is suitable, or every visible dot became exactly one hole. Keep the original version available for comparison.

Build a geometry acceptance strip

Before filling the X1S 2026 work area with pattern pieces, isolate a representative seam section. Record the intended values from the pattern designer rather than estimating them from a screenshot.

If the purchased file cannot provide those shapes cleanly, ask its seller for explicit hole geometry in an appropriate vector format. Manual reconstruction can also work, provided it follows the intended dimensions and layout. Replacing every dot with an arbitrary circle changes the pattern and may alter how the seam behaves.

Use the imported geometry to make a paper or other suitable nonproduction proof of count and placement before material processing. Then validate the rest of the pattern, including grainlines and seam allowances. A correctly imported hole sequence does not establish the overall pattern scale.

Keep geometry approval separate from material approval

Check the TYVOK X1S 2026 configuration and software information for the installed setup. The artwork inspection above is not a leather-processing recipe or a stitch-strength guarantee. Identify the material and its treatment, confirm suitability, and establish the operation on a matching sample before a full sheet. Do not transfer another machine's perforation settings.

Text decorations can fail for the same underlying reason: italic and underline styling may need explicit shapes. Check visible effects against the actual imported paths whenever appearance carries manufacturing meaning.

Can I just enable a dashed-line option after import?

Not if the job requires specific hole shapes. A dashed operation is not automatically equivalent to the pattern designer's circles or slots, especially around corners and endpoints.

Why did the final dot become a half-circle after expansion?

Stroke caps and the location where the styled path ends can affect the converted appearance. Compare the endpoint with the designer's intended hole, then repair or replace that geometry before using it.
