20W vs 50W Fiber Laser for Deep Metal Engraving: Where P2 Ultra Fits

20W vs 50W Fiber Laser for Deep Metal Engraving: Where P2 Ultra Fits

A 20W versus 50W fiber laser comparison starts with what the part must look like and survive, not the largest wattage number. TYVOK P2 Ultra is a 20W 1064 nm fiber marking machine. It may be a sensible match for compact identifiers, logos and surface detail; a contract for deep metal removal needs an actual sample, a measured target and a timed process. More power can change the available processing window, but it does not automatically guarantee a better finish or a better business case.

Write a measurable mark requirement

Ask whether “deep” means tactile texture, a visible recessed logo, a specified minimum depth, or survival after abrasion. These are distinct targets. Record alloy, hardness or treatment, blank thickness, polished or brushed finish, and whether the mark will be painted or filled after engraving. If a customer specifies depth, agree on the measurement method and where on the art to measure it. A photograph cannot establish depth, and a high-contrast dark mark may have little material removal.

Consider the part's function. Deep engraving close to a thin edge, sealing surface, bend or load-bearing area may be unacceptable regardless of machine capability. Get engineering approval for functional parts. Small decorative gifts have more latitude, but still need a sample to avoid a ragged edge or an unexpectedly long run time.

Test the 20W route on exact stock

The P2 Ultra product page lists 20W, 1064 nm and a 150 × 150 mm marking field. Use the official material settings guidance only as a test starting point. Mark a small coupon with the final line width and fill density. Log focus, passes, process time, cleaning time and the condition of the surface outside the artwork. Measure depth where required with a suitable instrument, not by touch.

Try the final design on a spare part after the coupon. A solid block may take much longer than a narrow serial number. Check edge quality, burr or roughness, discoloration, heat effects and any geometry change. If the 20W process reaches the target only through very long cycles or poor finish, request a comparable higher-power sample on the same material and artwork. Compare accepted parts per hour, not nominal watts.

Requirement Sample evidence Buying implication
Dark readable surface mark Contrast after cleaning and handling 20W may be worth qualifying first
Shallow recessed logo Measured relief and clean edge Time and finish decide fit
Specified deep pocket Depth measurement and part integrity Higher-power process may be justified
Abrasion-resistant ID Defined wear test and final read Verification method matters more than photo

Include the production system in the comparison

The cost of a deeper mark includes machine time, operator handling, inspection, fume control and rejected material. A higher-power machine might reduce beam time yet require a different enclosure, larger investment or a different level of operator training. A 20W machine can be economically sound for numerous surface marks even when a shop outsources occasional deep engravings. Conversely, if almost every order has a measured deep-removal requirement, a surface-marking-oriented workflow is a poor purchase basis.

Confirm software, service, field size and accessory compatibility in both offers. Do not compare a bare machine quotation with a fully equipped package. Record the frequency of each job type, then price the actual mix. This prevents one difficult sample from dictating an unnecessary purchase for the rest of the catalog.

Request comparable supplier samples

Give each supplier the same blank, artwork file, physical mark size and target depth. Require the returned part, process time, depth measurement method and cleaning state. If the sample is polished after marking, ask whether polishing is included in quoted production time. Check whether the part was held in a special fixture that the offered package does not include. A result produced on soft aluminum cannot settle a stainless order. Compare the accepted samples side by side under the intended viewing conditions and estimate the same annual volume for each quotation. This turns a vague power discussion into a purchase decision based on parts you can actually sell.

Purchase decision

Choose P2 Ultra after a sample shows that its 20W process meets your intended mark and cycle-time threshold. For a certified depth or functional part, obtain the customer's written acceptance criteria and measured proof first. If the deep job fails or is too slow, a higher-power fiber service or machine may be the appropriate path.

Does 50W produce exactly 2.5 times the useful output of 20W? No. Material, process and target affect the comparison.

Can a dark mark be used as proof of depth? No. Measure depth separately.

What should a supplier sample include? The same material, artwork, area, depth target, time and inspection method. Check current P2 Ultra specifications and purchase options alongside those measured results.
