Adhesive Leather Patch Liner Smoking? Isolate the Contamination Source

Stop unusual smoke and identify the patch as a stack: face, coating, adhesive, and release liner. Lowering power does not prove an unknown adhesive safe; missing composition keeps the blank on hold.

A patch is four materials, not one

Adhesive-backed patches add liner, adhesive, coatings, and unknown chemistry that can contaminate results or make the blank unsuitable.

Observation: smoke appears at the cut edge and residue collects under the patch. Controlled test: stop output, cold-inspect the layer stack, and compare supplier documents for face, coating, adhesive, and liner. Interpretation: underside residue implicates lower layers but does not identify their chemistry. Action: quarantine the lot; test nothing until every layer is documented eligible.

Cold inspection before another exposure

|---|---|---|

Layer Cold evidence Branch
Face Supplier's exact substrate description Proceed only if laser-suitable
Coating Color or protective top layer specification Hold if chemistry is vague
Adhesive Technical data or supplier confirmation Refuse unknown or incompatible chemistry
Liner Material identity and process instruction Remove or retain only as directed

Record where residue appears—face, edge, underside, fixture, or extraction path. Location is useful diagnostic evidence after chemical suitability has been established.

Follow residue back to its layer

  1. End the run and ventilate under the workshop response plan.
  2. Quarantine the lot so another operator cannot retry it.
  3. Inspect an unheated edge and photograph the layer stack.
  4. Ask the supplier for composition and laser-processing guidance.
  5. Only after evidence passes, test an expendable same-lot coupon under active supervision.

If eligibility is established, use an expendable edge coupon and note whether the liner is present according to supplier instructions. Compare residue location with a face-only sample where the supplier offers one. Do not peel an undocumented liner merely to see whether smoke changes; that creates a new exposed-adhesive condition.

Quarantine rules for a changed supplier lot

The investigation ends in identified-and-qualified, identified-and-incompatible, or still-unknown. Only the first state can proceed to process testing.

Review current P2 details on the TYVOK P2 page. For any customer-owned patch or garment, Customer-Supplied Items on P2: Build an Intake and Refusal Ticket supplies the intake evidence gate.

Patch-layer questions worth resolving first

Should I peel the liner before engraving?

Only when the blank supplier's documented process calls for it; exposed adhesive can create a different contamination and fixture problem.

Can smell identify the bad layer?

No. Odor is not a safe material-identification method.

Why did last month's patch work?

A supplier can change liner, adhesive, or coating without changing the listing image. Qualify each lot.

Unknown adhesive ends the run

Do not tune around an unidentified layer. Close the investigation only when every layer is qualified, incompatible, or formally refused.
