Optical Laser Power vs Machine Wattage: Read a P2 Quote Correctly

Compare optical output with optical output. A number on a power adapter, an electrical-input specification and a laser-module rating describe different things. Converting milliwatts to watts changes the unit; it does not explain what the number measures. For a P2 quote, ask the seller to identify the selected module and label every power figure before deciding which option fits your work.

A buyer discussion about a 10W machine advertised with a 72000mW figure shows the practical confusion. The discussion does not establish what that larger number represents. Treat an unexplained figure as unresolved information, rather than assuming it is optical output or accusing a seller of a specific error.

Three numbers that belong in different boxes

For example, 72000mW equals 72W mathematically. That calculation alone cannot reconcile it with a separate 10W description. Likewise, multiplying a hypothetical adapter's 24V by 5A gives a 120W rated electrical output capacity, not a measured 120W beam. These are illustrative labels, not P2 electrical specifications. Measuring wall consumption would answer another question again.

Turn an ambiguous quote into a comparable one

Send back the exact listing screenshot and ask for the model, module identification and specification sheet associated with the item being sold. Keep the seller's reply with the quotation. If a listing mixes multiple options, make sure the confirmation names the selected option rather than describing the strongest option anywhere on the page.

Then compare the process you actually need: a shallow visible mark, a photograph, or cutting an eligible sheet. Output rating alone does not determine contrast, edge quality or whether a particular material interacts appropriately with that laser type. The distinction between a blue diode and a fiber process is especially relevant when a buyer expects a metal result from a wattage number.

The current standard P2 product page describes compact galvo engraving and multiple power options. Confirm the purchased configuration directly. Standard P2 should not be evaluated as though it were P2 Ultra or a fiber machine. This comparison does not establish its electrical draw, included accessories or delivery availability.

Evidence that is more useful than a larger number

Once the module identity is clear, request an actual-blank demonstration with defined acceptance details. Include the intended design size and surface identity. A photograph of a different material under favorable lighting does not resolve whether your own logo will remain readable. If no representative demonstration is available, keep that uncertainty in the buying decision instead of filling it with a wattage assumption.

Does a larger adapter mean the engraving will be deeper?

No. The adapter supports the electrical system; its label does not predict a completed engraving. Depth depends on the supported laser process, material and verified operating conditions. Do not infer a depth guarantee from the supply rating.

Can I compare a 10W diode with a 10W machine of another laser type?

You can record their optical ratings in the same units, but that is not a sufficient process comparison. The source type and material interaction still differ. Ask for evidence of the required result on the intended blank before ranking them by the shared number.
