Wooden Row Counters: Check 09 to 10 Before Engraving the Dial

Check a manual row counter through 08, 09, 10 and 11 before engraving its final dials. Confirm which window shows tens, which shows units, and which direction each dial must turn. Two numbered wheels do not create automatic carry: unless the mechanism demonstrably provides it, the user advances the tens wheel by hand.

A wooden knitting row-counter project shows the format as a practical craft accessory. The important proof is the number visible through the assembled opening, not whether the loose circles look orderly in the design file.

Make a paper mechanism that can count

Print the faceplate, dials and pointer positions at actual size. Keep each piece identified as front, back, tens or units. Put the paper parts together in the intended viewing direction and turn them with your fingers. If the numerals rotate behind a stationary window, check them through that window rather than reading around an exposed circle.

The method for placing clock numbers by angle can help distribute labels evenly, but a row counter has its own sequence and indexing. A ten-position dial has ten equal steps; that geometry alone does not determine whether the numeral under the pointer increases when turned clockwise. The viewing face and the construction decide that.

Paper counter state Manual action Expected visible result
08 Advance units once 09
09 Return units to zero and advance tens 10
10 Advance units once 11
99 Reset both dials when intentionally restarting 00

An unintended jump from 09 to 19 is a sequence problem to fix before wood processing. Also inspect 6 and 9, the spacing around 1, and whether the faceplate masks part of a digit. If a printout is blank or clipped, resolve the paper-proof export before using it as an assembly reference.

Personalize each dial as a separate part

Use original or appropriately licensed files and suitable wooden blanks. The TYVOK P2 has a listed 60 × 60 mm engraving field, so confirm that each separate dial and its holder fit. A small engraving field does not promise that the entire finished counter or a large downloaded wheel can be processed at once.

Keep the direction reference outside the visible artwork on the holder, and use the documented P2 focus method. Engrave before installing hardware. Once the cooled parts are assembled, check that a dial stays on the chosen numeral during ordinary handling yet turns without excessive force. Follow the hardware supplier's guidance rather than overtightening a fastener to hide a poor fit.

Do two wooden dials automatically change 09 into 10?

No. A simple two-dial design normally requires the operator to change both positions at rollover. Only describe automatic carry if the actual tested mechanism provides it.

Can I engrave the number sequence in reverse to fix the dial direction?

Possibly, but prove the whole assembled paper counter first. Reversing only the labels can create upside-down numerals or the wrong reading order if the viewing side was the real mistake.
