The installation controls the seam

Large outdoor signs are assembled from multiple wood sections, and installation movement can undo precise shop alignment.

Observation: three shop-aligned panels will be installed across an exterior wall with seasonal moisture change. Controlled test: model a dry and wet board width using the substrate supplier’s movement guidance and the installer’s fixed edge. Interpretation: closing gaps in the wet case means the dry layout is too tight. Action: revise panel widths, slots, or restraint before artwork is divided.

Number panel backs and give the installer a map. A perfect shop layout can still be assembled in the wrong order on site.

Worked movement worksheet without a universal gap

  1. Confirm species or panel construction with the supplier.
  2. Mark grain direction, visible face and installer reference on each panel.
  3. Ask the installer for mounting surface, fastener and exposure details.
  4. Calculate two seasonal conditions using material guidance, not a universal gap.
  5. Build a full-size seam sample and have the installer sign off.

Example worksheet: three 300 mm panels measured in the dry condition. If trusted material guidance gives a 1.2 mm increase per panel for the expected range, the assembly must accommodate 3 × 1.2 = 3.6 mm total movement. A second scenario using 0.6 mm per panel yields 1.8 mm. These are worksheet examples, not universal wood values; replace them with supplier-supported inputs.

Hand the installer a numbered panel map

Give the installer the numbered backs, fixed reference, expected movement direction, and both seasonal cases. Laser-cut seams do not override the mounting design.

What gap works for every outdoor wood sign?

None. Species, panel width, moisture change, construction and restraint all matter.

Will sealing the edges stop movement?

A finish may slow moisture exchange but does not make wood dimensionally fixed.

Should every panel float?

That is an installation-design decision. Define fixed references and movement paths with the installer.

Send the movement assumptions to the wall

Panel numbers, the fixed edge, seasonal cases, and fastener clearances travel with the installation drawing. They are part of the sign specification.
