Large-Panel Smoke Extraction: Test the Four Worst Zones
Begin with a non-emitting airflow and capture check at four deliberately unfavorable panel zones. Output testing starts only after a site-specific extraction and exposure-control plan exists and passes that check. Good capture near an outlet does not prove the far corner or operator side is controlled, and a visual test is not exposure certification.
Start with airflow and zero emission
Ventilation cost and smoke control remain core buyer objections for large open-frame systems.
Observation: a non-emitting airflow check shows movement toward capture at the near corner but stagnation at the far operator corner. Controlled test: with output still disabled, verify source-capture geometry, discharge, make-up air, and the written exposure-control plan at all four zones. Interpretation: uneven non-emitting flow blocks output authorization. Action: redesign capture and repeat the zero-emission map.

Compare the four least favorable zones
- With the laser off, verify airflow direction at all four zones using a non-emitting method permitted by the ventilation plan.
- Confirm the written extraction route, discharge location, make-up air, exposure controls and fire readiness before any output.
- Only after those gates pass, use one supplier-identified material and equal small supervised marks.
- Record plume direction and time to clear without smelling for detection.
- Change one capture variable and repeat all four zones; do not accept a local improvement alone.
Only after the extraction and exposure plan is approved may equal supervised marks on one eligible material provide visual capture observations. If plume escapes toward the operator, stop immediately. A change to baffle or capture position requires all four zones again, not only the improved corner.
Visual capture is not exposure certification
The final record says either output not authorized or controlled trial completed. It never calls an absence of visible smoke an exposure certification.

Is no visible smoke proof of safe air?
No. Fine particles and vapors may be invisible; formal exposure assessment requires appropriate expertise.
Can a room fan replace source capture?
It may spread contaminants and is not source capture.
Does a larger fan always fix the far corner?
Duct restriction, make-up air, panel obstruction and capture geometry can dominate.
No airflow authorization means no output
A failed zero-emission map returns to ventilation design. A completed visual trial remains an observation under the exposure-control plan, never exposure certification.
