Center the name inside the usable visual field, not the raw tag rectangle. Subtract the hanging hole and its keep-out area, then compare geometric center with the optical balance of the actual name.

A 50 mm tag example
On a 50 mm tag with a hole at the left, the usable field may begin well to the right of the physical edge. Centering WILLIAM on the full outline can make it look pulled toward the hole; centering within the usable field provides a defensible starting point.

Proof long and short names
- 1. Confirm supplier-documented anodized stock; P2 acts on the anodized surface, not bare aluminum.
- 2. Trace or measure the physical outline and the hole instead of trusting a marketplace thumbnail.
- 3. Build a non-output tool layer for the keep-out and usable field.
- 4. Proof the longest and shortest approved names before releasing the variable-name set.

Why does mathematically centered text still look low?
The hole removes visual weight from one end, and letter shapes distribute ink unevenly. Measure first, then make a documented optical adjustment on a proof.
Can one center point fit every name?
The baseline can remain fixed, but different word shapes may need bounded optical review. Do not silently resize names beyond the approved minimum type rule.
Does the tag shape prove its material?
No. Geometry and chemistry are separate gates. Require supplier documentation for the anodized surface.
