Quote the Keychain Hardware Assembly, Not Just the Engraving

Include split-ring installation, connector inspection and handling in the keychain quote. A low-cost ring still takes time to fit, and assembly rejects consume finished blanks. Measure a short representative batch instead of treating the engraving timer as the entire job.

A July discussion of desktop-laser profitability includes keychains sold through wholesale accounts with inexpensive hardware. The business example raises a useful operational question: how much work happens after the mark is complete? The figures below are illustrative, not the seller's results or a TYVOK speed claim.

Time a complete assembly cycle

Prepare the actual hardware, tools and eligible engraved blanks that the order will use. Start the timer before opening and organizing the hardware. Assemble a small set, inspect the closures, count rejected components and put accepted pieces in the agreed intermediate container. Stop only when the set is ready for its next step.

Keep one-time preparation distinct from repeated work. Finding a tool once is a setup cost; opening and fitting each split ring repeats with quantity. If some blanks have awkward holes or thicker attachment areas, include those in the timing sample rather than using only the easiest pieces.

A small arithmetic example

Suppose assembling and checking 20 pieces takes 18 minutes. At an illustrative labor allowance of $20 per hour, that portion costs $6, or $0.30 per accepted piece if all 20 pass. If two pieces are rejected and the time is unchanged, dividing by 18 accepted pieces gives about $0.33 before replacement hardware or damaged blanks are counted.

That calculation does not set a selling price. Add the other order costs and the commercial margin you require. It simply prevents an unnoticed assembly task from being treated as free. Repeat the measurement when the ring style or blank changes; do not assume a smaller connector is quicker to fit.

Personalization can also change the marking work. A variable-name width check helps keep a long name from unexpectedly changing layout. Record that as artwork preparation, separately from ring fitting, so the quote explains the actual cause of extra work.

Match the P2 to the marked component

The TYVOK P2 is a compact galvo platform with a currently listed 60 × 60mm field. Qualify the blank surface for the selected blue-laser configuration and use supported holding and protection. Buying a metal ring does not imply the P2 will cut or engrave that hardware. Keep loose components outside the processing area and attach them after the approved marking and cleanup steps.

If a wholesale order includes a stand, price the complimentary retail display separately inside the bundle. The stand's design and assembly effort should not disappear into the hardware estimate.

Should I include rejected rings if they cost very little?

Yes. Record both the replacement component and the handling time. Repeated small rejects can also signal that the specified hardware is a poor fit.

Can I multiply a single keychain's assembly time by the order quantity?

Use several representative pieces instead. A single easy piece can omit sorting, occasional difficult closures and batch inspection, while a short complete cycle captures them more realistically.
